As part of their science unit this term, Year 2 has been exploring life cycles and how some features of living things change throughout their life stages while other features stay the same.
To explore this up close, the students have been able to watch the life cycle of chickens from the very beginning through their egg hatching program. The school have been lucky enough to have had fertile eggs delivered to us and we have had the privilege of watching them hatch.
Students have been asked to make predictions about which egg would hatch first and are recording daily observations to identify features and how they are changing. This has been a very exciting project and families are invited to pop in and visit our fluffy friends.
The chicks are now growing and they will be with us until the end of the term and will then return next term as our Quintilian chickens in the garden area.
Our chickens roam freely about our organic vegetable gardens and they are cared for by our children. In addition to the educational value, the gardens are used to demonstrate the connection between sustainability, the recycling of waste, the chickens, and the growing of vegetables.
